Barber, Doris Emily Elliot- Doris was born September 10, 1921 in Clarendon, PQ at the family farm near Sand Bay. This place, now currently known as “The Foundation.” She was the third child of Harold Elliot and his wife Pearl Little Emery, Hazel and Viola were her siblings. Doris attended school and church at Austin until age 11 when the family moved to the Zion area where she then attended both school and church. Later she attended Shawville High School. In 1939 she married the guy next door, Lawrence Barber. They moved to a farm on the same concession, where the lived until 1953. While there, four children were born into the family: Brenda, Gwen, Miles and Edgar. Years later, Todd’s birth completed their family.

Doris worked as a clerk in Langfords and Dean and Merrits Grocery. In 1967 she joined the staff of P.C.H. working as an admitting clerk. Later, she moved to the accounting department and retired at the age of 70. She enjoyed her work and made many lifelong friends.

She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge until its closing. She faithfully attended the Shawville Wesleyan Church until her healthy no longer permitted. Involvement in the Sunday school was her passion. In all of her activities, Doris enjoyed making treasured friends.

Doris’ talents were many including writing songs and poems for coworkers, retirement dinners, other talented included sewing, crocheting, knitting, ceramics and hosting dinners

Her family fondly recalls all of the family dinners she hosted on varied occasions.

In May 2012, after a serious fall, she had to make many adjustments and was able to remain in her home until October 2014. Then she moved to Friend of St. Joseph’s in Campbell’s Bay where she remained until December 2014. Following this move, she was moved to PCH Long Term where she lived until her passing on October 10, 2015. Even in these circumstances, she continued to make new friends.

Throughout her lifetime, many calls, cards, and visits were much enjoyed by her. Her love for God and others was evident.

At Doris’ funeral, she was described as godly, gracious, gentle, generous and the glue that kept her family together.

Doris aged 94 had a life well lived with faith and humor. During difficult times she usually said, “This too shall pass.”

On October 10, 2015, her passing marked the end of her Elliot-Barber generation. Predeceased by husband Lawrence in April 2000 and son Miles in March 2009. Doris is survived by 4 children, 14 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great children.
